Russia and Indonesia should develop cooperation in such fields as nuclear energy and agriculture and seek to increase trade to about $5 billion, Russian lower house speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said Wednesday at a meeting with Oesman Sapta Odang, the speaker of the Indonesian regional representative council (the upper house of the country's parliament).
"Our goal is to reach trade worth about $5 billion. It is a very serious indicator, which will reflect indeed mutually beneficial relations and the parties' interest for their further development ... It is important for us to develop cooperation in nuclear energy, agriculture, there are also prospects for cooperation in the fields of civil aviation, shipbuilding," Volodin said.
The Indonesian speaker pledged to give consideration to the proposals of the Russian party to enhance trade and improve economic performance.
Volodin stressed that Russia was pleased to have an opportunity to hold such a meeting and expressed hope that the inter-parliamentary contacts would be further developing.
The Indonesian politician, in turn, invited Volodin and other Russian lawmakers to pay a working visit to Indonesia to discuss the further plan for the development of cooperation between the two countries.
Besides, the Indonesian upper house speaker also invited the lawmakers of the Russian Federation Council to take advantage of the resumption of direct flights between Moscow and Bali and visit the island to mark a new era in the Russian-Indonesian relations.
In 2017, the trade between Russia and Indonesia totaled $3.3 billion, showing an increase of 25.2 percent, compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the Russian exports to Indonesia doubled in 2017, amounting to $788.8 million.
